THOMPSON - Finally back to running
with OD Tri ambitions for 2007!"I ran in High School, to get ready for swim season and hated it. I ran at the Naval Academy and hated it. I ran in the USMC and hated it. I hated it because of the constant shin splints I lived with. I continued to live in pain whenever I ran more than 12 miles a week, until I came down with a larger injury, my ITB. So now I was forced to find a solution to this injury. I found that both my ITB and shin splints were caused by my lack of arch support and excessive pronation. Custom orthotics solved both and away I went. I was invincible, and made up for all of those years of painful running by going overboard. I had coached triathletes, but didn't listen to my own advice and overtrained big time! I was broken. My knee would swell up after running more then two weeks of 10 miles. I would take off and get right back into a swollen, very tight knee situation. I quit running and became a bike racer for 3 years. Then I heard about Steve and his approach to training for athletes with run issues. No over volume, just quality, minimalist quality. I thought it might be my solution. So I signed up with Steve and started to run off road for the first time to ease the impact and I ran no more than every other day. I did not run on the track. I didn't do the really long runs (so far no more than 1 hr on the schedule), and I've been injury free with my knee. I've been able to get back the majority of the speed I had prior to my injury, with about 1/4 of the run training. I really can't say enough about the coaching I've received from Steve. I KNOW if I was coaching myself, I would not be injury free." SONJA
FEUTH - Qualified for Duathlon World
Championship and set a 10k PR!"I started training with Steve in November 2005 and have since been sticking to him like glue. I've seen a great improvement in my times since I started training according to his training programme as it was specifically designed according to my ability. I got to know Steve via the internet, as I was looking for a coach who could give me feedback on my training. I got in touch with Steve by e-mailing him and he replied back to me straight away. Coach Steve is very specific in each of his workouts and techniques which were great as I saw great improvements on my time from the first triathlon I did. He was also wonderful in helping me find the right bike and setting up the proper fit. I was disappointed in my cycle times so he taught me techniques of efficient riding which improved my times. He always was on the other side to hear of my complaints of illness and training and always gave an encouraging word or two. He gave me nutritional advice which also helped me greatly. I lost weight and became leaner, healthier, and stronger. I've achieved a lot in one year of just training according to Steve's programme; I came 1st in my first triathlon, 1st in my regional champs as well as in the top 10 for RSA Champs. For duathlon I came 1st in my first duathlon, then 6th at RSA Champs and was selected to go to Worlds. I've even broken my personal best time for the 10km, getting my time down to 37:30. I'm always speaking about Steve as he has done a lot for me even though that I live in South Africa, it is like he is with me all the time. He is just a phone call away if I need to talk to him." GAMMILL - Just set a new marathon
PR of 2:57 at Columbus!"After a disappointing marathon finish time of 3:15 last fall and a curiosity about trying a triathlon or two the following season, I decided to enlist Steve to not only improve my marathon time (I was running Boston in the spring), but get me ready for a few summer triathlons as well. Steve first focused on Boston, and was able to convince me that I was often overtraining. With his guidance I was able to run a personal best of 3:07 on the tough Boston course. With that under my belt, I was ready to focus on the triathlon season. His planning and patience were tremendous as he was always accessible to answer questions. Again, with Steve’s guidance I was able to place first among first time triathletes in my first event, then won my second triathlon overall! With the triathlon season complete I decided to return to the same marathon I ran the previous fall, and what a difference a year with Steve made. I was able to run a 2:57 marathon, beating my previous personal best by 10-minutes." |
